I have been craving sweets lately, and, even though I just finished eating lunch, I want to eat more. Hey! There’s shortbread here!
This treat is a Level 10 Food Monster (100 calories). I pull out my trusty d20 and roll a 6. I add some kind of modifier of 3 and get 9. This is not enough to defeat the enemy, so I happily eat the biscuit. It deals me 10 damage.
Analysis
Something is not quite right about losing a battle, but being glad that I did. I enjoyed that biscuit and didn’t really feel guilty about eating it. Part of that is that I track my food using MyFitnessPal, so I know that I can have this snack and still have room for a decent dinner later. In theory, a higher level adventurer would easily trounce a piddly, little treat like this, but I’m not there yet. I still have to figure out how to level up.
One idea I had was to assign levels to food based on their grade level (A-F) from a site like Calorie Count. My initial system would give this cookie a grade of D, which would make it a Level 11 food. It would attack me with 1d20, and I would defend or counter-attack with something like 1d6 + my willpower modifier.
I think my next step is to create some basic rules and try them out for a while. So far, this has all been theoretical, using imaginary modifiers, depending on my mood. If I have something written out, I will have a much better chance of sticking with it.
If you have suggestions on how to overcome any of these rule-based obstacles, please let me know in the comments below!
